2 Vaugondy World Maps - c1752, & c1804 below.

by Vaugondy, Robert

Fine antique map, Orbis Vetus in utraque continente juxta mentem Sansonianam distinctus, nec non observationibus astronomicis redactus, accurante Robert de Vaugondy, Geographo Regis ordinario 1752 Cum Privilegio Regis.

Original copperplate-engraved double-hemisphere “Old World” circa 1752 with ancient place names, by Original copperplate-engraved double-hemisphere “Old World” circa 1752 with ancient place names, by Geographer to the King, Robert Vaugondy Senior, (Gilles Robert de Vaugondy, 1688-1766). In the Eastern Hemisphere, the western part of Australia is relatively accurate but the east coastline shows the contemporary French conjecture with Tasmania joined to Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea. The Western Hemisphere is labelled Atlantis Insula and the north-west coast of North America is absent. Between the spheres are two elegant cartouches. The upper cartouche depicts Father Time with two charming putti, and the lower cartouche is in traditional rococo style.

It is rare to find such a superb pair of maps, showing the world as known, 50 years apart. This map is the first edition by Robert de Vaugondy. The second map, below, is by Charles François Delamarche who inherited the engraved map plates from Robert de Vaugondy Junior (Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723-1786), and added subsequent discoveries, and a contemporary-style floral garlanded cartouche.

To its border this map measures approximately 46.3 x 74 cm.
