England and Wales engraved by the Omnigraph c1848

by Becker, Francis Paul

Becker antique map of England and Wales c1848.

Original Omnigraph map published for a small atlas by F. P. Becker in c1848. This antique map was engraved by the omnigraph method by Francis Paul Becker & Company, Patentees, with contemporary hand colour (from the time of publication) for Becker’s Omnigraph Atlas of Modern Geography, compiled from the latest and most authentic sources, and including all the recent discoveries throughout the world. Colour pen outlining of counties is as issued.

In 1842 Becker patented his Omnigraph method of printing. "The Omnigraph is a new mode of engraving upon steel, to the perfection of which Mr. Becker has devoted many years; he has now taken out a patent for it, and been enabled to complete and publish an Atlas, which for clearness and mutiplicity of names, stands unrivalled, and from the method of inserting the names obviating the necessity of each letter being engraved by hand (the chief expense in other Atlases) it cannot be competed with for cheapness."

The map is in good condition except that the right side margin is rather narrow, where it was caught into the binding when published. Size of map 220 x 275mm (8.5/8 x 11 inches).
