Antique county map of Essex by John Seller after John Speed.

by Seller, John

Antique map of Essex with interesting historical information c1787 by Francis Grose.

From the Supplement to the Antiquities of England and Wales: by Francis Grose Esq F.R.S. published between 1773 and 1787. Francis Grose updated the plates John Seller used in his Anglia Contracta (small edition of maps of England, published in London circa1697. Seller had re-engraved at a reduced size, the county maps published by John Speed circa 1676.

Accompanied by contemporary description and historical observations of the County of Essex, the text below the engraved map continues over the page. The page is heavy grade paper, from the tall edition of this work. Descriptive historical text, contemporary coloured outlining of county and additional later hand-colour, all make this a particularly desirable map. If you would like a more detailed scan, or information of the text, please ask.

Map size is 125 x 150mm (5 x 6 inches). Page size is 320 x 240mm (12.5 x 9.5 inches).
