Published under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Inset: Plan showing the probably extent of Ancient Jerusalem,and with Reference to the regions of the 12 tribes. “Every known ancient site is inserted in this map, and also some places of which the positions are only conjectural; these latter are distinguished by a lighter character of writing and a note of interrogations.

This is an interesting map by William Hughes (1814-1876). It was engraved by Hughes in 1842 and published in London c1843.

Mainly at the instigation of Henry Brougham who was actively involved in educational reform, in 1826 The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK) was established with the object of publishing information for people who were unable to obtain formal education, or who preferred home-education. SDUK published inexpensive texts intended to adapt scientific and intellectual material for the rapidly expanding literate public. SDUK maps were particularly popular as British people became more aware of the rest of the world.

Page size is 17 x 14 1/4 inches (approximately 43 x 36cm). There are soiling marks on this page, and a few small page edge tears, but it is otherwise in good condition, with wide margins as issued. Price reduced appropriate to condition.
