New Map of Palestine or the Holy Land. Mitchell, c1879.

by Mitchell, Samuel Augustus/ S.Augustus

Beautiful antique map. Palestine and the Holy Land, with Modern Jerusalem at a larger scale than the rest of the map of Palestine.

Original fine map, colour-printed and finished by hand. Constructed and engraved in Philadelphia by W. Williams, and Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1879 by S. Augustus Mitchell in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington. From 1860, S. Augustus Mitchell succeeded his father Samuel Augustus Mitchell, in publishing Mitchell's New General Atlas.

The decorative foliage scrolling around the border of the map, was a tradition that was begun in 1855 by the Colton family of mapmakers. This map has subtle pale colour-printing differentiating the regions, and the contemporary red highlighting the separation of Galilee, Samaria, Judea and Idumea from Syria, Bashan and Perea. (On the reverse of this map is an antique map of Hindoostan, Farther India, China, and Tibet, in the same style and of the same date.)

This map is in good condition except for slight damage along the left edge of the page. To the outside edge of the decorative border measures 295 x 365 mm (11.7/8 x 14.3/8 inches). Page size is 320 x 385 mm (12.1/2 x 15.1/8 inches).
