Switzerland and the Alps of Savoy and Piedmont. Keith Johnston c1861.

by Johnston, Keith

Antique map of Switzerland, Swiss alps and mountains of northern Italy, with an incredible amount of finely engraved geographical detail of the region.

Wonderfully detailed original map with contemporary colour, by Queen’s Geographer, Keith Johnston (1804-1871), F.R.S.E. (Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh), engraved by W. & A.K. Johnston of Edinburgh for Johnston's "General Atlas", a fine work, first published in 1861 by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh & London (and later popularly reissued several times until 1889).

Sir William Johnston (1802-1888) started as a printer in 1825, and founded the family publishing firm. Younger brother, Alexander Keith Johnston (1804-1871) joined the family business and trained with a number of international geographers, becoming royal geographer.

There is slight age-soiling, and a vertical crease at the left of the fold at the base, and conservation-repaired splits at base of central vertical fold (which was for pubication in an atlas half the size of the map). Margins are complete as published (too large for this scanner). Please ask for full picture. Map page size is 460 x 37cm (18 1/4" x 14 1/2")
