Hungary. Antique Map of fine quality by C.Smith c1836

by Smith, Charles

Superb antique map of Hungary by Charles Smith, c1836.

An original copperplate-engraved map with lovely contemporary hand-colour, published for "Smith's New General Atlas" in London by Charles Smith in1808, 1823, and 1836 (this issue). This Atlas was a great success, owing to the accuracy of the engraved geographical information, the high quality paper used, and the elegance of the excellent hand-colouring.

Charles Smith was a publisher, engraver and mapseller. His major publications were his “New General Atlas” and a “New General Atlas” which he first published in 1818. He also published a “New English Atlas” in 1804, which was reissued many times through to 1864. All of these works were decorative, with countries or counties outlined, soft watercolouring internally, and fine geographical detail. Their popularity resulted in a number of reissues, with revisions of internal details. By 1834 Charles Smith had become “Mapseller Extraordinary to His Majesty” (William IV).

Size approximately 29 x 38cm (11.5 x 15inches). This map has been scanned at 300dpi but it has very fine detail. If you would like a larger definition scan of any region please let us know.
