Spain and Portugal Antique Map by Becker. c1860

by Becker, Francis Paul

Antique map of Spain and Portugal by Becker, published in London, c1860.

Original Omnigraph map published for a small atlas by F. P. Becker in c1860. This antique map was engraved by the omnigraph method by Francis Paul Becker & Company, Patentees circa 1842, with contemporary hand colour (from the time of publication) for Becker’s Omnigraph Atlas of Modern Geography. Some outline colour of counties as issued, and additional soft internal colour and pale wash added at a later date. This is a very pretty map with clearly discernable detail. On the right side, the island of Minorca is printed within a break in the border.

The omnigraph of F.P. Becker & Co. was a machine that produced steel engraved plates with an intaglio impression (indentation from the pressure of the external edge of the plate during the printing process.)

The map is in good condition except that at the base the margin is rather narrow, where it was caught into the binding when published. Size of map 220 x 275mm (8.5/8 x 11 inches).
