Spain & Portugal Antique Map by C. Smith c1836

by Smith, Charles

Spain & Portugal, Majorca, Minorca and Ivica (Ibiza) c1836. Fine original-colour antique map by Charles Smith.

An original copperplate-engraved map with lovely contemporary hand-colour, published for Smith's New General Atlas in London by Charles Smith in 1808, 1823, and 1836 (this issue). The C. Smith Atlas was a great success, owing to the accuracy of the engraved geographical information, the high quality paper used, and the elegance of the excellent hand-colouring.

Charles Smith was a publisher, engraver and mapseller. His major publications were his New General Atlas and New English Atlas of 1804, which was also reissued a number of times up to 1864 - each reissue with geographical updates as required. Antique maps by Charles Smith were decorative, with countries or counties outlined, soft watercolouring internally, and fine geographical detail. By 1834 Charles Smith was “Mapseller Extraordinary to His Majesty” (William IV).
