by Walker, J. & C.

Wonderfully detailed antique map of Denmark by S.D.U.K. c1844.

John Walker, Alexander Walker and Charles Walker mapmakers were collectively known as J. & C. Walker. Engravers, draughtsmen and publishers, they flourished in London from 1820-1895.  Over this period they worked out of 47 Bernard St, Russell Square (1830-6), 3 Burleigh St, Strand (1837-40), 9 Castle St, Holborn (1841-7), and 37 Castle St, Holborn (1848-75).

J. & C. Walker published their “Royal Atlas” with several reissues, and engraved many maps and charts for the British Admiralty, but are probably best known for their work in conjunction with the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK). The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was established with the aim of publishing information for people who were unable to obtain formal education, or who preferred self-education.

This map is in fair condition, with slight foxing to be expected with the age of the map.
