by Archer, Joshua

Antique map of northern part of Italy by J. Archer, c1847.

Original steel-engraved map drawn and engraved by J. Archer, Pentonville, London, and published in London circa 1847 by James Gilbert for Gilbert’s College Atlas for Families and Schools.

Perhaps the most informative of all early maps, Archer’s maps were designed to be used, as well as studied. Joshua Archer (c1792-1863) drew and engraved each map on a steel plate, and outlined the regions in coloured pen. Outside the border on the right are scales of measurement, referencing Lake Geneva (at top left of map) with Berwick on Tweed in England. J. Archer flourished as a cartographer, engraver, and printer between 1833 and 1866.

This wonderfully detailed antique map is on thick paper with central vertical fold, as published. It is in good condition except for slight foxing along the right side at the base (which would not show when framed). Page size is 270 x 375mm (10 5/8 x 14 7/8 inches). To map border measures 235 x 285mm (9 1/4 x 11 1/4 inches).
