Beautiful contemporary hand-coloured map engraved on copperplate by Thomas Conder (1747-1831) for Robert Wilkinson's "A General Atlas, being a Collection of Maps of the World and Quarters, the Principal Empires, Kingdoms Ec. With their several Provinces, & the Subdivisions, Correctly Delineated", published at No. 58 Cornhill London circa 1794. This is a beautiful map as well as being full of information about the political status within its borders at the end of the 18th century.

Robert Wilkinson (c1752-1825), flourished as a mapmaker in London between 1768 and 1825. Having acquired the copper-engraved plates of  maps from the estate of map printer, publisher, and map-seller, John Bowles (c1701-1779), Wilkinson achieved prominence by updating Bowles's plates, and having each edition coloured in his spectacular signature manner for his General Atlas of the World. First published in 1794, the plates were updated and reissued in 1802 and 1809. The maps were printed on good quality paper, and are usually found today with a few soiled spots and slight discolouration due to their age, but handling has usually mostly been confined to the margins.
