Vienne, France antique map by Victor Levasseur c1860

by Levasseur, Victor

Antique map of Dept. de la Vienne. Carte Ancienne de Géographie de Département.  Decorative antique map of the French Department of Vienne, with its capital of Poitiers and small engraved vignette of the battle of Poitiers of 1356 among the beautiful narrative border illustration of this otherwise peaceful pastoral region.

Original steel-engraved map with its geography surrounded by a superbly engraved narrative of the region, with illustrations of produce, commerce, industry, local landmarks, historically important personage, and scrolls containing statistical information. Geographer Victor Levasseur established his reputation as a mapmaker between 1838 and 1854 with this series of maps for one of the most decorative atlases ever published, Atlas National Illustré (Illustrated National Atlas) published in Paris circa 1860.

The hand-colour within the map is contemporary (from the time of publication). The beautiful hand-colour to the decoratively engraved border is of a later date, but certainly makes this a very beautiful map. This is one of the few vertical maps in the series. With wide margins, approximate measurements are 520 x 350mm (20.5 x 13.75 inches), with engraved map 410 x 280mm (16 x 11 inches). This was a faulty scan. The map does not have heavy lines across the upper decorative engraving.
