Antique map of Spain and Portugal, c1778. This is A New and Accurate Map of Spain and Portugal, Drawn from the best Authorities, by Thomas Bowen, 1778.

Original copperplate-engraved map by English cartographer Thomas Bowen for “Middleton’s Complete System of Geography” published in London circa 1778. This wonderful early publication included engravings illustrating ethnography, architectureand topography as well as maps of the period. It was compiled and published in London during 1777 and 1778 by Charles Theodore Middleton.

Thomas Bowen (fl. 1767-1790) followed h is father as an eminent mapmaker in London. After his father, Emanuel Bowen, died Thomas took over his father's business and inherited his father’s position as mapmaker to George II and Louis XV. Although similarly hard-working and respected, like his father Thomas died in a debtor’s prison.

With antique map has fine later hand-colour accentuating the detail. Despite the slight age-discolouration, this is a decorative map in very good condition on thick paper. The reverse has slight offsetting of printing from adjacent page, which will not detract from the map when framed.

Page measures 230 x 360mm. (9 x 14 inches). Intaglio impression around the map border measures 195 x 305mm.
