John Walker, Alexander Walker and Charles Walker were collectively known as J. & C. Walker. Engravers, draughtsmen and publishers, they flourished in London from 1820-1895. During this time they worked out of 47 Bernard St, Russell Square (1830-1836), 3 Burleigh St, Strand (1837-1840), 9 Castle St, Holborn (1841-1847), and 37 Castle St, Holborn (1848-1875).
J & C Walker published their Royal Atlas with several reissues, and engraved many maps and charts for the British Admiralty; but are probably best known for their work in conjunction with the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK).
SDUK worked from 1829-1832 with Baldwin and Cradock of 47 Paternoster Row (later Baldwin, Cradock and Joy); in 1844 with Chapman and Hall; Chas Knight & Co from 1844-1852 (first at 22 Ludgate St, and then at 90 Fleet Street); G. Cox 1852-1853; and Stanford 1852-1870.
This map is in fairly good condition, with slight discolouration to external edges of paper and along the central horizontal fold. Approximate page size: 350 x 415mm (14 x 16 1/4 inches). Image: 320 x 405mm (12 5/8 x 16 inches)
