A New & Accurate Map of the Netherlands or Low Countries, c1793.

by Wilkinson, Robert

Antique map of the Netherlands with beautiful contemporary hand-colour. Robert Wilkinson. London, c1793.

Fine original map engraved by Thomas Conder (1747-1831) with contemporary outlining of provinces and fine hand-tinting with watercolour  for A General Atlas, being a Collection of Maps of the World and Quarters, the Principal Empires, Kingdoms Ec. With their several Provinces, & other Subdivisions, Correctly Delineated, published in London in 1793 by Robert Wilkinson of No. 58 Cornhill.

Most of Wilkinson's maps were updates of the plates that previously belonged to English map publisher John Bowles. (Wilkinson acquired his library of engraved copperplates after Bowles died in 1779.) R. Wilkinson flourished as a map maker and atlas publisher between 1768 and 1825, and his popular atlas was reissued in 1802, 1809, and later until his death in 1825.

As with much early colour, the paint has oxidized and shows through to the rear side of the map. The paper has 26 in Indian ink outisde the plate mark, and slight soiling as is to be expected considering its age. It has wide borders as published. Approximate page size is 265mm x 340mm (10.5 x 13.5 inches); to intaglio plate mark measures 295 x 325mm (11.5 x 12.75 inches).
