Lovely hand-coloured miniature map of Italy - 15 x 18cm.

Original copperplate-engraved map published circa 1729 for the pocket scientific atlas “Atlas La Science” by Zacharie Chatelain, Junior (1690-1754).

Based on maps by the exceptional cartographer Guillaume De l'Isle (1675-1726) who was elected to the French Academy of Science,  l'Academie Royale des Sciences in 1703. Zacharie Chatelain was the brother of Henri Abraham Chatelain, the creator of the grand geographical encyclopaedia, Atlas Historique, ou Nouvelle Introduction a l’Histoire, a la Chronologie et Moderne (Atlas of History, or New Introduction to Chronological and Contemporary History). Between 1705 and 1720, Zacharie and his father (also Zacharie) assisted in the publication of this gigantic work.
