Yonne French Dept. Levasseur antique map c1861. Chablis region

by Levasseur, Victor

Antique map of Department of Yonne in Burgundy. Dept de l'Yonne. Carte Ancienne de Géographie de Département. Very decorative antique map of Yonne in north-west France. Main cities: Auxerre, Avallon & Sens.

Original steel-engraved map surrounded by a superbly engraved narrative of the region, with illustrations of produce, commerce, industry, local buildings, coats of arms, and scrolls containing statistical information. Geographer Victor Levasseur established his reputation as a mapmaker between 1838 and 1854 with a series of maps in this style, for one of the most decorative atlases ever published, Atlas National Illustre (Illustrated National Atlas) published in Paris circa 1861.

This map has contemporary hand-colour to the regions (from the time of publication). The fine hand-colour to the border decoration is of a later date, but certainly complements with wonderful map.
With wide borders, its size is approximately 36 x 54cm (14 x 21 inches).
