Antique map of Europe by Keith Johnston F.R.S.E.

Original antique map by Queen’s geographer, Alexander Keith Johnston (1804-1871), F.R.S.E. (Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh). Engraved, printed and published by W. & A.K. Johnston, Edinburgh & London, circa 1873 for Johnston's "General Atlas".

William Johnston (1802-1888) started as an engraver and printer in 1825, and founded the family publishing firm of W. & A.K. Johnston when his younger brother (Alexander) Keith Johnston (1804-1871) joined him in 1826. Being particularly interested in physical geography, after university Keith Johnston trained with international geographers, including Alexander von Humboldt. In 1841 his first atlas “National Atlas of General Geography” was published, resulting in his 1843 appointment as Geographer Royal for Scotland. He adopted the title of “Geographer at Edinburgh in Ordinary to the Queen”.

This map has contemporary colour (outlining of countries was done at the time of publication. Map to border measures 325 x 425mm (12.3/4 x 16.3/4 inches). Page size is 475 x 365mm (18.75 x 14.5 inches) with central vertical fold. There is slight soiling towards the page extremities but otherwise the map is in fine condition
