Rare Captain Cook New Zealand antique map c1774.

by Cook, Captain James

Captain Cook chart of New Zealand. Antique Map. Visited 1769-1770. Carte de la Nle Zelande visitée en 1769 et 1770 par le Lieutenant J. Cook Commandant de l'Endeavour vaifseau de fa Majesté. (Lieutenant J. Cook Commander of the Endeavour vessel of Her Majesty.)

The most important map published on New Zealand. Original copperplate-engraved map by Benard for the first French edition of the account of Cook's Voyages, published in Paris in 1774. This was the first complete map of the two island's coastlines as charted during Cook's first voyage. It shows the track of Cook's ship Endeavour, with dates at locations, and depth soundings. Cook's impressions of the mountainous interior of New Zealand is obvious from the engraving.

This rare chart is much in demand. There are slight tears at top right of this map and at the left. The map has been conservation-repaired where necessary and the sides have also been conservation reinforced. The map has subtle later colour which suits the map and distracts from its condition. The price reflects its condition. (The shape is onlly distorted in this camera-scan.)

Page size is approximataely 525 x 410 (20 5/8 x 16 1/8 inches)
