OUTLINE MAP OF OCEANIA Showing Routes of Early Discoverers. Large original map by D. Macdonald, CE, MGSA, drawn by L.J. Waddington CE, engraved by A. Dulon and L. Poates, and published circa 1888 by the Picturesque Atlas Publishing Company which was established in Sydney and Melbourne, with American directors, for the express purpose of publishing Picturesque Atlas of Australasia to commemorate 100 years of settlement in Australia. Some of the finest engraved maps and prints of the late 19th century illustrated the discovery, settlement and development of Australia and the neighbouring countries of New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and its nearest Pacific Islands

This interesting map shows the voyages of the principal discoverers of Australia and the Pacific region, north to the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands - including Abel Janszoon Tasman in 1642, William Dampier in 1688, James Cook on his first voyage 1768-71, second voyage 1772-5, and third voyage 1776-9.  Australia, also shown as Terra Australis and New Holland as fully circumnavigated, with separate Tasmania. There is no inland detail to Australia, but many places are named along the east coast. Other explorers with important discoveries of Australia and the Pacific include Luis Vaez (Paz) de Torres and Pedro Fernandez de Quiros in 1606.
