Large antique map of Australia with North Australia to east coast. Bartholomew c1867

by Black, A. & C.

Bartholomew antique map of Australia with Goldfields highlighted c1867. Tasmania within a border at centre base. Map by John Bartholomew, Edinburgh. Published by A. & C. Black, c1867. Contemporary wash border and coastal outline with North Australia through Northern Territory and Queensland.

Original map of Australia with North Australia, constructed and engraved by John Bartholomew, Edinburgh, and published in Edinburgh by A. & C. Black, circa 1867. With contemporary pale wash marking the state borders and the coastline, Goldfields marked with yellow, and a scale in British miles, the most distinctive feature is of course North Australia, stretching from the east border of Western Australia to the east coast, through the north of what is now South Australia, and Queensland (which had been separated from New south Wales in 1859.) The names given to coastal regions when ships visited our shores, explorers’ personal comments and naming of interior terrain, including the large region covered by The Torrens Basin in South Australia, all contribute to make this an interesting map.

Page size 445 x 605mm (17 ½ x 23 ¾ inches). To the map border measures 410 x 520mm (16 ¼ x 21 ½ inches)
