Australia. Geo. F. Cram small antique map c1890.

by Cram, George

Antique Map of Australia. Original map, published in 1890 by George Cram, using the process of cereography, or wax engraving. This is an attractive antique map from Cram's Home Knowledge Atlas, has interesting geographical notations and population statistics of Australia and Tasmania at the end of the 19th century.

George Cram Company was an engraving and publishing firm in Chicago. The centre of map publishing in the U.S. shifted from New York City to Chicago, with Rand, McNally and Cram firms. Geo. Cram and Rand, McNally were both noted for their efficient output of precise maps with states highlighted by colour-printing. Maps were filled with useful, up-to-date information, including transport routes and geography, and were continually revised and reissued, with individual short print runs.

The map extends over its border to accommodate the information along the northern and southern coastlines. The map is almost to the top of the paper. This map is in good condition except for age discolouration along the edges of the map, and a tear in the left margin which has been reinforced by archival repair tape. On the reverse side there is part of a map of China and Japan - from Corea to Hong Kong.

Page size is 295 x 370mm (11 7/8 x 14 1/2 inches). Image measures 280 x 350 mm (11 x 13.25 inches).
