Menzies was a Royal Navy Submarine Commander who spent the first two years of his life in China. After retiring from the navy he returned to China, and after years of research around the world he tells of a three year circumnavigation of the world (100 years before Magellan) by Emperor Zhu Di's admirals, who set out in March 1421 "to the ends of the earth to collect tribute from the barbarians beyond the seas" "to unite the world in Confucian harmony". Discovering America (70 years before Columbus), Australia, and Antarctica, they returned to China in October 1423. The emperor had been deposed, China was in political and economic chaos. Their great ships were abandoned to decay and their voyages records were destroyed. Menzies has assembled evidence from around the globe.

A fascinating read..
