INDIAE ORIENTALIS, nec non INSULARUM ADIACENTIUM Nova Defcriptio, Per Nicolaum Visfcher, Nunc apud Petrum Schenk Junior cum Privilegio Ordinum Hollandie et Westfrisia. (East Indies and not adjacent islands newly described by Nicolaes Visscher, then re-issued in 1726 by Pieter Schenk the younger, with Dutch and Westfrisian permission.)

This is one of the most accurate early charts of the coastline of north Australia, named Nova Hollandia (New Holland); with many places named along the Gulf of Carpentaria, including Cape Keerweer on the north coast, reached by Willem Janszoon in the Duyfken in 1606 when sent by the Dutch East India Company to search for new trade opportunities.

For nearly a century, the Visscher family of cartographers were important mapmakers and mapsellers in Amsterdam. The Schenk family were well-known print and map-sellers and publishers of architectural drawings, maps and atlases who based their maps on the works of cartographers Nicolaes Visscher (1649-1702), Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) and Jan Jansson (1588-1664).

In good condition, with fine later hand-colour, this map has a central vertical fold and good wide margins as published. Size: 460 x 560 (18 x 22 inches). This beautiful map can be viewed and bought from Brisbane Antique Emporium in Clayfield, where it is on display. For $2,200 it is framed in fine veneered wood moulding with elegantly decorated conservation-matt.
