India VI. Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Antique map c1833

Map engraved by J & C Walker, published by Chapman & Hall, 186 Strand, London. September 1st 1833, under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.

With Gurry or Gurh, Fortification, Droog, Hill Fort, Poor, Town, Nuddy, Rivers - this very detailed antique map of India has the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Cambay (extending through the border) on the left and Gurra Mundlah in the east. To the north it shows Marwa, Mewar, Harraoutee and Bundlecund, and extends in the south to Khandelish and Berrar. Geography is highlighted by hachures for mountain ranges, and contemporary pen outlining of regions (from the time of publication). Within an engraved cross-banded border, and with scales of British Miles and Indian Cosses (a measure of distance in India, varying from one and a quarter to two and a half English miles).

Engravers, draughtsmen and publishers, John, Alexander and Charles Walker, known as J. & C. Walker, flourished in London from 1820-1895 engraving maps and charts for the British Admiralty, and for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (S.D.U.K.), as well as their own Royal Atlas and its updates.

Page measures 355 x 415mm (14 x 16 3/8 inches). The page is complete, with wide margins around the border, as issued. Foxing marks throughout, but not obvious. Priced accordingly.
