A fine antique map of China with 15 provinces including Hainan (the most southern & largest Special Economic Zone established by Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in the late 1980s), Formosa (Democratic State of Taiwan, or Formosan Republic), and the Tributary Kingdoms of Corea (now divided into North and South Korea) and Tonkin (the northern-most part of Vietnam).

Original copperplate-engraved map with superb detail and subtle contemporary hand-colour by J. Roper published by Robert Wilkinson in 1809 for The General Atlas of the World.

Robert Wilkinson (c1752-1825) acquired the copper-engraved plates from the estate of map printer, publisher, and seller, John Bowles (c1701-1779). Wilkinson flourished as a mapmaker in London between 1768 and 1825 (the year he died). He achieved most prominence by updating Bowles’s plates for The General Atlas of the World which he first published in 1794, and reissued with further changes to the plates, in 1802 and 1809.

Page size 275 x 345mm (10.3/4  x 13 3/4 inches). To plate mark measures 240 x 295mm (9 1/2  x 11 5/8 inches). This map is in fine condition except for very light soiling.
