Contains 15 Subject Provinces, with 2 Islands of Hainan, Formosa, Tributary Kingdoms of Cora and Tonkin. A fine antique map of China with 15 provinces including Hainan (the most southern & largest Special Economic Zone established by Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in the late 1980s), Formosa (Democratic State of Taiwan, or Formosan Republic), and the Tributary Kingdoms of Corea (now divided into North and South Korea) and Tonkin (the northern-most part of Vietnam).

Original copperplate-engraved map by J. Roper, with subtle contemporary colour from time of publication by Robert Wilkinson in 1809 for The General Atlas of the World.

Robert Wilkinson (c1752-1825) flourished as a mapmaker in London between 1768 and 1825. He acquired the copper-engraved map plates from the estate of map printer, publisher, and seller, John Bowles (c1701-1779), and achieved most prominence by updating those plates for The General Atlas of the World which Wilkinson first published in 1794, and reissued with further updates, in 1802 and 1809.

This map is in fine condition except for very light soiling. Page size 275 x 345mm (10.3/4  x 13 3/4 inches). To plate mark measures 240 x 295mm (9 1/2  x 11 5/8 inches).
