An Accurate Map of the Empire of China. Rollos c1779.
by Rollos, George
Beautiful antique map of China in the 18th century.
With a decorative cartouche (title piece) and showing hours east from London (in Arabic letters), this is a lovely map of China and the adjacent countries by Geo. Rollos (George Rollos), for The Universal Traveller published in London, c1779 with superb later hand-colour to the maps, border and cartouche.
English geographer, George Rollos, flourished as a mapmaker in London between 1754 and 1789. He based many of his maps on earlier ones by eminent French cartographer, Robert de Vaugondy.
With wide borders and two faint vertical folds for a publication of a narrower size, this map is in good condition except slight damage to the lower edge of the page (not intruding into the area of the map).
To the border the map measures 265 x 340mm (approx. 10.5 x 13.3/8 inches). Page size is 33 x 46cm (13 x 18 inches).
(The reduced price reflects the map's imperfections.)
