Antique Map of Arabia, Egypt, Nubia, & Abyssinia.

Antique Map of Arabia, Egypt, Nubia, & Abyssinia.

by Letts, Son & Co.

Enormous detail on this wonderful map published c1880.

In 1835 Thomas Letts, Junior, took over the family-owned printing and publishing company which had been established in 1816 by his father, Thomas Letts, Senior, (1803-1873). In 1870 when Thomas, Junior was joined by his son, Charles, they raised capital and set up Letts, Son & Co. and extended their business to the publication of atlases. (The Company was liquidated in 1885 and the atlas plates were sold to Mason & Payne who in 1887 produced the same style of atlas, under the name Letts's Popular Atlas of the World.)

Letts's maps have comprehensive information and explanation to support them - in this case with populations and inhabitants, area, produce, and animals. The addition of colour-printed country outlines and coloured pen lines of shipping routes it is a very interesting map, is easier to decipher, and is eminently decorative. The map extends to Babylon within the upper border but crosses this border line to indicate Baghdad and also Isfahan.

There is slight soiling, mainly along the page extremities, as is to be expected. The map is printed on the usual relatively fine paper. 360 x 435mm (14 1/4 x 19 1/8 inches). The page is complete but the map is too large for the scanner & my phone image is not as clear. I have additional scans of margins.
