Ancient Egypt. Wonderful antique map with historic names. c1831

by SDUK

Antique map of Ancient Egypt Published by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge; by G. Long, Professor of Greek, London University, engraved by J. &. C. Walker and published by Baldwin & Cradock, 47 Paternoster Row, January 1st 1831.

“This map does not contain every anciernt name that might be inserted in a catalogue of Egyptian towns Etc. It contains however all which are of historical importance whose sites could be ascertained with tolerable precision.” There is a wonderful lot of information.. perhaps the most information on any map of ancient Egypt.

The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK) was founded in 1826, mainly at the instigation of Lord Brougham, with the object of publishing information for people who were unable to obtain formal education, or who preferred self-education. SDUK published inexpensive texts intended to adapt scientific and high-minded material for the rapidly expending literate public. The company disbanded in 1848 - although works already commissioned, continued to be published through to 1873. SDUK worked from 1829-1832 with Baldwin and Cradock of 47 Paternoster Row (later Baldwin, Cradock and Joy); in 1843-4 with Chapman and Hall; Chas Knight & Co from 1844-1852 (first at 22 Ludgate St, and then at 90 Fleet Street); G. Cox 1852-1853; and with Stanford 1852-1873.

This map has remarkable content and wide margins, but it has slight soiling and a few dents to the page (obviously appreciated previously!). Page size is 355 x 415mm (14 x 16 3/8 inches).
