Omnigraph engraved map of Africa, with earlier names of regions and kingdoms.

Engraved by the omnigraph by Francis Paul Becker & Company, Patentees circa 1856 with contemporary hand colour (from the time of publication) outlining the coastline of Africa and differentiating adjoining countries and Madagascar. It is wonderful to be able to find a map with African tribal names from so long ago.

Becker spent many years on his invention of the omnigraph which allowed inserting names in an engraved plate without the necessity of placing each individual letter, thus saving much time in creating the plate for the printing of the map.

This map is in good condition except for slight damage along edge at left and base. To the border measures 245 x 195mm (9.5 x 7.5 inches). Page size is 275 x 210mm (11 x 8.25 inches).
