Africa. Finely-engraved decorative antique map, John Tallis c1853.

by John Tallis & Company

Fine Africa antique map with engraved vignettes of Arab family of Algiera, Bedouin Arabs Encampment, Korranna Hottentots, St. Helena, Bosjeman Hottentots (wild bushmen) - as published in 1853, with pen outlining of regions and landmasses, and pale blue wash along the coastlines, by John Tallis and Company.

John Tallis was the driving force behind the Tallis publishing company, but John Rapkin was largely responsible for Tallis's reputation as publishers of accurate, finely engraved decorative maps. Tallis maps are easily recognized by their steel engraved vignettes of important subjects in the region, and elegantly drawn and engraved borders. Specialist map illustrators drew the illustrations, and then engraved a steel plate, in reverse from a mirror image. the illustrations for this map were drawn by J. Marchant and engraved by J.H. Kernot. The finely engraved decoration of Tallis maps required skill and time. Unfortunately it was also expensive. In 1865 Tallis was among the last of the publishers of beautifully decorated maps and prints.

This map is in fine condition, as published, with wide margins and central vertical fold for a publication half the size of the map. The map has soiling and age discolouration. Price appropriately. Page size, 270 x 348mm (10 5/8 x 13 3/4 inches).
