Tom Petrie's Reminiscences of Early Queensland (from 1837). 1932 2nd edition.

by Petrie, Tom/Constance, Palmer,N.

Published in Brisbane by Queensland Book Depot in conjunction with Angus & Robinson Limited in Sydney. 1932 Second Edition. (First published in 1904 with a Preface by daughter Constance Campbell Petrie, 1904. Preface to Second Edition by Nettie Palmer, 1932.)

Original green cloth hardcovers with embossed P in circle. Gold printing on spine. Dedication in ink, "Gordon from Grandma To wish you a Happy Birthday 25/41" on endpaper. (Don't you just love that personal connection with previous owners..)

A few pages at beginning and end are heavily foxed. Slight periodic foxing throughout. The 16 black and white full page plates are present - including one view of early Brisbane - but unfortunately the plan of Brisbane town in 1839 is missing.

Important references from Tom Petrie's close association with the aborigines of southern Queensland."The greater portion of the contents of this book first appeared in the Queenslander in the form of articles, and when those referring to the aborigines were published, Dr Roth (Chief Protector of Aboriginals, Queensland), author of Ethnological Studies, etc. wrote "...The aborigines of Australia are fast dying out, and with them one of the most interesting phases in the history and development of man. Articles such as these, referring to the old Brisbane blacks... are well worth permanently recording in convenient book form... they show an intimate and profound knowledge of the aboriginals..."
