As Kumar Shri Ranjitshinhji the author played test cricket for England, first-class cricket for Cambridge University, and county cricket for Sussex. Often known as Ranji, he is regarded by many as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. Unorthodox in technique and with fast reactions, he brought a new style to batting and revolutionized the game. He invented and popularized the leg glance. Maharaja Jam Saheb was ruler of the Indian princely state of Nawanagar. from 1907 to 1933, and was later Chancellor of the Indian Chamber of Princes and represented India at the League of Nations.

The book describes training and outfitting for cricket, batting, bowling, fielding, umpiring, captaincy and different cricket matches. It is a comprehensive, well-illustrated book on cricket.
