SEA PICTURES Drawn with Pen and Pencil by James Macaulay, M.A., M.D., editor of “The Leisure Hour.”
Published in London by The Religious Tract Society, 56 Paternoster Row, 65 St. Paul’s churchyard and 164 Piccadilly, and printed by William Clowes and Sons, Limited, Stamford Street and Charing Cross. First edition of this popular book. No date (1883) Size: 280 x 205 x 20mm (11 x 8 x 3/4 inches)

Decorative blue cloth cover with gold embossed pictures and lettering, and similar to spine. Blindstamped decoration to rear board. All edges gilt. Endpapers are finely printed light brown floral repeat pattern on cream-yellow background. Unfortunately there is foxing throughout this book, but the content is sufficiently absorbing to negate this.

Beginning with The Sea in Poetry from the Hebrews, Greeks and Romans, and the work of poets over the centuries since, this book goes on to cover The Physical Geography of the Sea, The Harvest of the Sea, and The Sea in History. The book is well illustrated throughout with wood engravings of important artists’ works. There are wonderful character studies of people as well as important ship portraits. Artifacts and the fortuitous discovery of new lands are illustrated alongside inevitable calamities of seafarers. The natural cause of waves, unusual behaviour of water masses when contained along coastlines and dangerous ocean phenomena caused by earthquakes and volcanos, are well described and illustrated, alongside peaceful and idyllic coastal scenes and ports of call.

Recordings from early travellers around the world – particularly the section on Antarctica, guarantee this book would be engrossing for anyone interested in sailing and the sea.
