Classical Calendar Panels: Month of August under the protection of Ceres.
This is a reproduction from a finely detailed and engraved copperplate, the twelve panels depict ancient mythical gods who were assumed to be the protectors of each month. Originally published in Paris circa 1750. In Roman mythology Ceres was the daughter of Saturn and Rhea, wife-sister of Jupiter, mother of Proserpina, and patron of Sicily. Ceres is the goddess of growing plants (particularly grains) and of motherly love. She was depicted in art with a sceptre, a basket of flowers and fruit, and a garland made of wheat ears.
