Framed antique map of Essex, Heraldry & Antiquities. Moule, c1838.

by Moule, Thomas

Moule, Essex county map with heraldry and antiquities.

Original steel-engraved map with ESSEX title on banner cartouche held by a Roman eagle on a base with SPQR (Senatus Populusque Romanus - official emblem of the ancient Roman government). A beautiful engraved floral border
has vignettes of Chelmsford and Southend with their coats of arms, and Gravesend at the mouth of the River Thames with shipping, between the harvest god, Saturn (with a cornucopia of fruit delicately placed in his lap), providing water as he directs nubile nymphs who are reaping the harvest.

One of the most decorative antique maps ever produced, it was created by writer on heraldry and antiquities, and influential map-maker, Thomas Moule (1784-1851), for The English Counties Delineated: or a Topographical Description of England, first issued from 1830 to 1832, and updated (including railway) for publication by George Virtue in 1836 (later colour).

The map is as issued, with narrow margins, now framed. It is in a stunning swept-back French-polished solid cedar frame with gold-leaf slip, conservation U/V glass, and a gilt-edged 8ply conservation-quality ragmat, that has been equally decoratively hand-painted.

The map to sight edge of mount measures 200 x 265mm (8 x 10.5 inches). External measurement of the frame is 450 x 510mm (17.75 x 20 inches). If you would like more complete picture of the map within the frame, please email sales@antiqueprintclub.com (There will be an additional shipment charge, in accordance with charge for your destination.) The price of this map is considerably reduced in recognition of the dint in the cedar below the map.
This map can be unframed if required.
