NUOVE SCOPERTE Fatte nel 1765.67.e 69 nel MARE DEL SUD. (New Discovery Made in 1765, 67 and 69 in the Southern Seas). A fine antique map of Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, and the South Pacific. This is one of the earliest maps to show Cook's voyages, and also those of Carteret, Byron, Wallis and Mouats. Original copperplate engraving by G. Zuliani after G.V. Pasquali, showing Captain James Cook’s voyage of discovery of New Zealand and the east coast of Australia. Published circa 1776 in Venice for “Atlantenovissimo” by cartographer and publisher Antonio Zatta, who flourished as a mapmaker between 1775 and 1797. Antonio Zatta based his map of Australia and the Pacific on Cook's map "A Chart of the South Seas". Published just three years after the official English account of Cook's first voyage around the world in the Endeavour, Zatta's publication of this map was one of the earliest to show Cook's discovery of the east coast of Australia and his charting of New Zealand, uses the names given during Cook's navigation of these coastlines, and shows Cook's Endeavour in the cartouche illustration. This map has Zatta's distinctive contemporary hand-colour (as published). It also has ample borders which can't been seen in this picture. As the map is large, it is difficult to provide a full scan for this listing. If you would like further pictures, please email sales@antiqueprintclub.com Map page size 405 x 300mm.
