A Complete Map of the Southern Continent Surveyedby Captain Abel Tasman & depicted by order of the East Indies Company inHolland in the State House at Amsterdam.

This is a most important and rare antique map of Australia. It is the earliest map to show Australia only, inEnglish. This superb copperplate-engraved map was published in London circa 1744by Emanuel Bowen (who flourished as a mapmaker between 1714 and1767). It is based on the map published in Paris in 1664 by traveller, author,amateur scientist, cartographer, inventor and diplomat, Melchisidec Thevenot(c1620-1692). Bowen has added the Tropic of Capricorn and the two sections of text in the olde English mode of the time of publication.
