Chart of the Discoveries of Captain Carteret in New Britain, with a part of the voyage of Captain Cook by the Endeavour Straits and the discoveries of Captain Dampier in the region. Superb original map engraved by Andre for Rigobert Bonne. Published in Paris circa 1788 on thick hand-made paper (with later hand-tinting with watercolour) for "Voyage du Capne Carteret" in his “Atlas encyclopedique”, which is considered by many to be the best-known summary of all of Cook’s maps pertaining to the discovery of Australia. Royal hydrographer, Rigobert Bonne (1727 - 1794) was born in the village of Raucourt in the Ardennes. He compiled charts of the coasts of France, and his folio size “Atlas Maritime”, published in 1762, was re-issued in octavo size in 1778. Bonne's “Petit Tableau de France” was published in 1764. Bonne published a number of other atlases and maps, and provided maps for all parts of the known world for Guillaume Raynal’s noteworthy “Atlas de toutes les parties connues du globe terrestre” published in 1780. With Nicolas Desmaret he published “Atlas de geographie ancienne” in 1783, and the “Atlas encyclopedique” in 1787-88, re-issued long after his death, in 1827. Page size is 305mm x 460mm (12 x 18 inches). 250mm x 360mm (10 x 14 inches) to strong intaglio impression (plate mark). It has ample borders which can't been seen in this picture.
