Cambridgeshire Antique Map by J. Seller after John Speed. Francis Grose c1787
Original copperplate engraved map circa 1787, with faint green wash border outline, published for atlas accompanying “The Antiquities of England and Wales” by Francis Grose Esq. F.R.S. In 1696, 1697 and 1703, John Seller (c1630-1697) published “Anglia Contracta”, a small atlas of the counties of England and Wales, based on the maps by John Speed. They were attractive little maps, accompanied by fascinating historic text of each region, printed below the map (sometimes crookedly!), and on the reverse. These maps were also used to illustrate Camden’s “Britannia Abridged” in 1701, and “The Antiquities of England and Wales” by Francis Grose, published between 1773 and 1787. The size of the map is 5 x 6 inches and the complete page is 12.1/2 x 9.1/2 inches. If you would like a more detailed scan please ask. Price: $154.00 (AUD) inc GST |
