Beautiful original hand-coloured copperplate engraving by Swan after eminent botanist William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865) for “The Botanical Magazine; or Flower-Garden Displayed” published in London circa 1827 by Samuel Curtis. Publication of "The Botanical Magazine" was begun in 1787 by Praefectus Hortis of Chelsea Physic Garden, William Curtis (1746-1799) “in response.. to solicitations for a work... (combining) Botany and Gardening”. It illustrated botanical specimens from around the world, and has been published continuously for over 222 years, - now as “The Kew Magazine”. This one of the rare larger size botanical plates from this wonderful publication. As the size of the publication is 23cm x 15cm (9 x 6 inches), this image has two vertical folds.
