John Sands Antique Map of the Counties of Cumberland, Bathurst, Westmoreland, Cook, Georgina, Camden. Original map, as illustrated, shows only the eastern half, due to the size restraints of our scanner. Please ask if you wish to see the west section. The map is not in brilliant condition - as is usual for this particular rather fragile publication. Original map printed in colour by half-tone relief photomechanical three-tone printing (pioneered in1880s, now called letterpress) for the most important Australian atlas published in the 19th century, the first atlas to provide up-to-date details ofthe counties and districts of Australia, ‘The New Atlas of Australia’ published in Sydney in 1886 by John Sands. Sands (1818-1873), founded the Australian printing and publishing firm John Sands Pty Ltd, Sydney. John Sands was apprenticed as an engraver and map-colourist to his father, well-known London engraver Robert Sands (The Sands family were engravers since 1741). This is a large map with a centre fold. Total map (double-page) size is 50 x 60cm. The upper and lower extremities of this map are water-damaged, but the damage would mostly be hidden when framed. The map has wide borders, but unfortunately our scanner is not large enough to show these.
