Mappemonde Reduite. French "World Map Reduced" (Well-framed with conservation materials)
Original copperplate-engraved map, published in Paris circa 1805 - after Captain Cook discovered the east coast of Australia and Matthew Flinders' circumnavigation of Australia and the discovery that Tasmania was an island state. Australia is still named "Nouvelle Hollande" (New Holland, as it was known for hundreds of years prior to the name "Australia" as adopted by Flinders. This lovely map, nicely hand-tinted with watercolour at a later date, is from a pocket-edition. The actual map is 11 x 17 cm (4.1/4" x 6.3/4"). It has been elegantly framed with linework on 8ply conservation mount, and a walnut veneered moulding with black edge. External frame size is 290 x 355mm (approx 11.1/2" x 14").
