Gazette du Bon Ton: Psyche. Original 1921 pochoir. Evening gown designed by Charles Worth.
Original pochoir, a labour-intensive (French) process, with a separate zinc stencil cut for each application of gouache and watercolour. Published in Paris circa 1921 for La Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style), illustrating the latest superior fashions and showing how and where they should be worn. The finest illustrators of the day were employed to introduce the couturiers designs to the wealthy subscribers. Eight images were selected for each periodical, which was published
by Lucien Vogel in Paris between 1912 and 1925 (except during
World War I), and distributed by Condé Nast. Distributed in the U.S. as Gazette du Bon Genre,
both titles translate roughly as Journal of the Good Style. These French fashion stencils have retained the "pochoir" description as they represent the pinnacle of skill in this print style.
