La Visite. (The Visit) Lady with 2 small girls. Original 1920 pochoir fashion plate by Pierre Brissaud (1885-1964), for Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style), to illustrate the latest superior fashions and where they should be worn. A pochoir (French for stencil) is coloured by hand with gouache and watercolour, through different stencils of zinc for each colour, to prevent the colours running together. Each successive stencil is placed carefully over the previous, to build up the tone and nuance of the image. Original pochoir by the finest illustrators of the day, showed fashions by prominent French designers, for Gazette du Bon Ton (the periodical for the well-to-do), published by Lucien Vogel in Paris between 1912 and 1925 (with a break during World War I) and distributed by Condé Nast. Distributed in the U.S. as Gazette du Bon Genre, both titles translate roughly as Journal of the Good Style. Using the distinctive pochoir style, the latest fashions are worn, and are frequently shown in appropriate settings, sometimes with others also stylishly attired. The grouping, gestures and expressions all provide a narrative of the situation. Price: $286.00 (AUD) inc GST |
