Australian View of early exploration. Men and women near pandanus tree with sailing ships offshore.
An original steel engraving by J.J. Crew from a sketch by Thomas Baines for "Australia, Illustrated" published in England by Virtue & Co. circa 1874 (with later hand-colour). An inveterate traveller, Baines joined Augustus Gregory as official artist and storekeeper, in the expedition across northern Australia between 1855–1857 sponsored by the Royal Geographical Society to evaluate the northern area of Australia for suitability as a colonial settlement. The Baines River was named after him. Much nicer than appears here, the engraving is in good condition. The area shown is just the image, there are ample borders outside this area. Size of image: 15cm x 20cm (6 x 8 inches). Price: $110.00 (AUD) inc GST |
