Fish. Spotted Firm-Fin Antique Print c1894.
Original (hand-coloured) wood engraving after a sketch by German artist Gustav Mutzel for a zoological encyclopedia Illustrirtes Tierleben by Alfred Edmund Brehm (1829-1884). First published in Leipzig between 1864 and 1869, it was republished in Austria circa 1896 as Brehm’s Tierleben (Life of Animals). The colour-printing of the lithographs for this work are of superb quality. In 1894 it was republished by Frederick Warne and Company of London & New York for “The Royal Natural History” by Richard Lydekker B.A., F.G.S., F.Z.S., Etc. (sic.). This lovely little engraving has a lined background, that is not as prominent in actuality as in this scanned image. This engraving is mounted in 50mm wide archival board and covered with cellophane for protection. The actual image measures 75 x.140mm (3" x 5 1/2"). Price: $38.50 (AUD) inc GST |
