John Gould (1804-1881) was known as the Bird Man, and this wonderful series of the birds of Australia certainly did much to earn him this reputation. A brilliant ornithologist who devoted his life to the study of birds, Gould was also a very successful businessman, who knew his limitations as an artist, and with his fine eye for detail, employed the finest lithographers of the day and closely monitored their work. Whilst most people have heard of John Gould, many are unaware that his artist wife Elizabeth Coxen (1804-1841) produced many of the early drawings from the time of their marriage in 1829 until her untimely death at the age of 37, following the birth of their eighth child.Price: $847.00 (AUD) inc GST |
